MATILDE (16) experiences the same symptoms as her mother. Distressed, she seeks help from Socorro, the village healer and midwife. Matilde wants to have an abortion, but Socorro offers her other possibilities and advises her to think it through, as there is still time. When the pregnancy becomes difficult to hide, Matilde confesses to her mother. Together they decide that Matilde will hide her pregnancy at Socorro’s house while they make a decision. During her stay, Matilde learns about the power of plants, fertility, and the many forms of motherhood. At six months, Matilde gives birth to a boy. The baby is given to a woman who has spent years trying to conceive. Matilde returns home lighthearted and holds in her arms her newborn sister, who, in an instinctive gesture, seeks her milk-filled breast.
